Memories of August part-3

 1st September 1945,

Dear Diary,

Last month I, Harry S. Truman, President of the United States gave the order to drop two atomic bombs in Japan in its two cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I had to do it because that's the only way we could have won the war because an invasion of mainland Japan would have taken a huge toll on our economy. Therefore I had to take a quick decision to decide the future of our country and I did it. However, I did not know the death and destruction that was to follow. After seeing the effects of my decision, a thought had crossed my mind, it was did I do the right thing? Is this a way to end a war? But then I remember something that before judging the ethics of my decision I must remember that in a war it is always my country, right or wrong.

Also if I had not done it then perhaps Stalin would have invaded Japan and introduced communism over there. Imagine the repercussions of that for the United States. The atomic bombing of Japan not only saved it from communism but perhaps also saved many American and Japanese lives from getting killed in the war. My action also sent a strong message to the Communists that while we appreciate their help during the war, we would not allow them to dominate the postwar world because after all communism is antithetical to liberty which according to me should be the cornerstone of the new world order. The new world order should not only emphasize peace but should also support the life, liberty and happiness of all citizens around the globe. For that, we need effective international organizations in the new era as dreamt by one of our greatest Presidents, Woodrow Wilson. We also need to end the spectre of communism that will be a grave threat to the free world now that Hitler and Japan have both been defeated.

This is the reason why the atomic bombings were required, they were required to ensure that the free world faces no threat from authoritarian forces. They were required to sustain the liberty of citizens around the globe and destroy those who threaten it. They were required to protect our youth from getting killed in the war and most importantly they were required to warn the Communists that liberty and not Communism will define the new era.

Already after the war, we see the true faces of the Communists, Korea is under threat from getting divided because of differences between the nationalists and the Communists, Germany faces the same prospect due to the presence of Soviet troops while a certain rabble-rouser called Mao Zedong threatens to usurp the rightful authority of Chiang-Kai-shek in China. We, the United States will and should now take a strong stand against Communism as it is synonymous with Fascism. In fact, Communism and Fascism are two sides of the same coin and they are the combined enemies of everyone who believes in freedom and in the idea that men shall not be ruled by Governments but be ruled by their own free will. Therefore both of these ideas must be destroyed if this world is to truly become free.
